BARABABY GUIDE

Materials & labeling for babies and children

What do GOTS, OEKO-TEX, FSC, CE, or BPA-free actually mean? Here we have gathered the most important information that we ourselves want to know when choosing products for children — without making the labels more complicated than they need to be.

Certifications and material specifications only apply when they can be substantiated for the specific product. We rely on information from manufacturers and suppliers and strive to be clear about what is actually verified.

Labels & certifications

A label can tell you a lot — but different labels check for different things. Here are the ones we encounter most often in our range.

GOTS Textile

Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS is a textile standard for products made with organic fibers. The standard includes both environmental requirements and social criteria throughout several stages of production and is verified through certification.

Viktigt att veta

GOTS only applies to products and production stages that are actually covered by the certification.

OEKO-TEX Textile

STANDARD 100

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means that the textile has been tested for a large number of regulated and non-regulated harmful substances. The requirements become stricter the closer to the skin the product is used.

Viktigt att veta

OEKO-TEX does not automatically mean that the material is organic.

FSC Wood & paper

Forest Stewardship Council

FSC is used for wood and forest-based materials and helps track raw materials from responsible forestry through the supply chain.

Viktigt att veta

Look for FSC information on the specific product — wood itself does not mean that the product is FSC-certified.

CE Product safety

CE marking of toys

The CE marking indicates that the manufacturer declares that the product meets the EU requirements applicable to it. For toys, CE marking is a legal requirement within the EU.

Viktigt att veta

CE is not an independent quality award and does not mean that an authority has tested every individual product.

02

Vad produkten faktiskt är gjord av

Materials we often encounter

Choice of material is about function, feel, durability, and what the product is to be used for. We therefore try to describe the material concretely on each product page when the information is available.

01

Organic cotton

Soft, common in baby textiles

Organic cotton describes how the cotton is grown. When a product is also, for example, GOTS-certified, we state that separately.

02

Silicone

Common in children's tableware & feeding

Silicone is often used for bibs, bowls, cups and other products for small children. We only state ‘food-grade silicone’, BPA-free or BPS-free when this is supported by product information from the manufacturer.

03

Stainless steel

Bottles, food containers & cutlery

Stainless steel is durable and is often used in products that need to withstand heavy use. The exact steel grade and care instructions may vary between products.

04

Wood

Toys & nursery products

Wood is a natural and often very durable material for toys. We also look at surface treatment, paint, age recommendations, and FSC information when available.

05

Natural rubber

Teethers & soft baby products

Natural rubber comes from the rubber tree and is used in products such as teething rings and bath toys. Material and allergy information should always be followed for the specific product.

03

Inte bara en etikett

This is how we think about security & responsibility

No single symbol tells the whole story about a product. That is why we look at the big picture: the product's function, materials, age recommendation, available documentation, and what the manufacturer actually states.

01

Specific product before general claims

We never try to assume that all products from a brand have the same materials, origin, or certification.

02

Age & function must match

For children's products, the correct age recommendation and safety information is at least as important as the material the product is made of.

03

We distinguish between design and manufacturing

A brand can be Swedish, Danish, or French without all of its products being manufactured there. Once we know this, we try to describe both aspects clearly.

04

Better concrete than green-washing language

Words like sustainable, non-toxic, and natural can mean different things. We prefer concrete materials, certifications, and manufacturing details when available.

OUR WAY OF CHOOSING

We do not select a product just because it has a nice label.

At Barababy, we select products one by one. We look at materials, functionality, origin, usage, and whether the product adds something we would want in our own homes with our children.

We prioritize clear product information and smaller, European brands when appropriate, but we prefer to be concrete rather than using big words like 'sustainable' without explanation.
